Do you know that the same optical fibers used to transmit telephone signals, Internet communication, and cable television signals, can be used as sensors and have been able to improve the safety of large infrastructures? Indeed, optical fibers can be turned into highly sensitive sensors when connected to dedicated sensing interrogation systems. Because the whole optical fiber serves as a sensor, distributed sensing techniques provide thousands of measurement points over tens of miles of cable. For years fiber optic distributed sensing solutions have been used to optimize the operation and recovery of oil wells. Today these systems are widely deployed for many other additional purposes, including monitoring and optimizing the operation of oil & gas pipelines and transmission power cables associated with power grids, interconnectors, and windfarms.

This webinar will provide an overview of fiber optic distributed sensing techniques, explain how optical fiber can sense temperature changes, strain changes or vibrations, and how signal processing can precisely locate such activity along miles of fiber optic cables. Several case studies regarding pipeline surveillance and power cable monitoring will be presented to illustrate the practical application of fiber optic sensing.
